They say eyes are the window to the soul, but that smile of yours is pretty powerful too.
A nice smile costs us nothing. It takes seconds to give away and adds years to our lives.
I’m not referring to the fake smiles we put on when feigning politeness. Or the plastered grin that appears when we’re shaking the hand of someone we dislike. I’m talking about that genuine, so nice to see you, I’m just happy to be here smile that warms any atmosphere. Those are the smiles that are simply priceless.
Smiling is good for you too. It makes you feel happier and more confident about yourself. It’s said to make you look younger and more attractive as well. So why aren’t we doing it more often?
Sometimes I let things get so cluttered in my mind that I don’t realize how distracted I am. I’m moving through my day at warp speed and I forget to breathe in my current surroundings and stay focused on the present. It’s a terrible habit that robs us of more happiness.
When we are smiling, we bring joy into any room we enter. Our smiles are so powerful that they can change the environment, redirect sadness and create a safe place for those around us. And it’s contagious!
I won’t pretend that we will have the capacity to smile all of the time. That’s not even a realistic goal. But we can, as often as we like, multiply the number of times we share one. If not for yourself, then for someone else. It can make someone’s day and open doors we didn’t think we could get in.
Try waking up in the morning and smiling at yourself in the mirror. Smile at your waitress or the sales person you see tomorrow. Smile gently at the person standing next to you on the elevator (not too long, because then that’ll make it creepy). I sometimes smile when I remember a silly joke or when I smell a familiar scent. It makes me grin.
Smile because you have something good going on in your life.
Smile because it lights up a room.
Smile because it warms a heart.
Smile because it makes you even more beautiful.
