Remember to Have Fun

By Samantha McKenzie

Do you sing in the shower? Do you dance “all out” when your favorite song comes on? Do you make time to be silly or to play a game? What are you doing for fun?

With so much of our time spent on fulfilling obligations and taking care of our responsibilities, it’s a good time to take a breather and plan for a bit more fun.

When’s the last time you did something just for the thrill of it? I’ve been meaning to search for a salsa or bachata class. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and have talked myself out of it for one reason or another. Dancing has always been one of my passions, a small part of me that I’ve carried around since my childhood days. After a couple of google searches, I found a local beginners class that starts this Friday. I signed up to add some fun back into my life.

This is not a call to abandon your life. It’s sorta like a small tug at your elbow to remind you that life is to be lived. A nudge to your whimsical side to get back to the basics. It shouldn’t all be about work and soccer practice. It’s okay to take a day off from work to play. And it’s perfectly acceptable to hire a sitter so you can get out of the house and do something just for you. Why not, right?

So what’s your fun look like? Don’t make it too complicated and don’t you dare overthink it. Just go back to your happiest days and remember what you used to do that excited you. I loved to roller skate and ice skate. I’m great at Taboo and I still have a urge to play laser tag (no, I’ve never! lol).

Whatever it is that lights you up or helps you to shake of the stress of the day, then do it. Schedule it. Plan for it. Find time in your week to do the things that make you laugh your ass off. I know I will. Now who’s up for paintball? I heard it’s a lot of fun!
