Being the CEO of Your Life

By Samantha McKenzie

Chief Executive Officer. This is the title of the top administrator in an organization whose primary role is to manage and maximize the value of the corporation.

The CEO, as its most often referred to, works collaboratively with a board of directors to create a vision, set goals and building a profitable business. The best of them are great at leading. They have exceptional discipline and are relentless at achieving their goals.

Great CEOs are usually the first one in and the last one out of the office. They grind, day and night, lose a considerable amount of sleep and miss out on tons of social events on their quest to be the very best. They know that sacrifice and dedication are key ingredients to achieving greatness. Their ultimate goal is to be successful and to leave a legacy behind.

You are the CEO of your life. Whether you like it or not, you make the daily decisions in your life that help you meet your goals. You are responsible for creating your own vision and coming up with a plan for the future. Some of us have a partner to work with. Others have a ready-made board of directors – a group of reliable, intelligent, competent people who we trust to help us make the best decision.

Oftentimes, we give up this power. We take a back seat to our lives and then wonder why life isn’t what we expected.

As CEOs of our lives, we should take charge and be equally diligent at getting results. This means we should demand more of ourselves. We should expect profits, study our own quarterly reports and be flexible when it’s time to make the necessary adjustments. This is an important role. Each year we should assess our work. Is what we are doing working? Are we meeting our goals?  Do we need to tweak our vision or should we do a major overhaul? No matter what you want to achieve, decide now to sit at the helm of your dreams and do the necessary tasks to become successful.

You may find that you need to develop new habits, like getting up earlier to do research. You may discover that your time management system is lacking. To be a successful CEO, you will have to identify ways to improve your lifestyle. You will have to introduce yourself to new people and new ideas. You may have to become a brand new you.

What ever it takes, decide today to take charge of your future. Don’t leave it up to chance. Luck, they say, rewards the prepared.
